Or he could do what I did and do a RH6.2 partitionless install so he
 won't
have to screw with his Win9x partition and installation. That way,
 when
he's done training with RH he can simply delete two files from his
 FAT32
root directory and go back to the way he was prior to installing
 linux
without any hassles.

It is but Im personally farting around with RH 6.1 because it will
 let you
do a partitionless install. ie. you don't have to screw up your
 Win9x
installation to use it. I think Mandrake is much friendlier to set
 up and
use though as I used it for about a week just for the hell of it.

> before i buy, i gotta few questions.

Don't buy anything! That's the beuty of Linux, it's all free.
 Download an
iso file (might take a few days) and have somebody with a CD Burner
 burn you
a bootable CD. If you have an older PC that does not boot from the
 CD then
the CD itself will have a utility to make a boot disk on it so all
 you need
is the CD itself.

Why not? Some winmodems are supported by Linux but not guaranteed to
 work
necessarily.

From: Ron Griffin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have just installed the glib 1.2.8 on my machine. The GTK++ that I
 am trying
to install next gives me the following....

'glib-config --version' returned 1.2.8 but GLIB (1.2.5)
was found! If glib-config was correct, then it is best
to remove the old version of GLIB. You may also be able to fix the
 error
by modifying your LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable GLIB-CONFIG
to point to the correct copy of glib-config, and remove the file
 config.cache
before re-running configure.

Now, I did everything to track down and remove an old version
 (couldn't find
any) so I deleted /usr/local/lib/glib and re-installed the library.
 deleted
the config.cache file from the GTK++ library and keep getting the
 same thing!
I have no clue what to do to modify the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable.
 I'm trying
to learn this stuff but the learning curve is killing me!

Thanks in advance,

Now, instead of getting kppp out of your system, it is easier just to

Subject: Cant create a partition with disk druid?? (newbie
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:47:13 GMT

From: "Trent Cook" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi again,

I figured the best way to get out of my linux mess, was a complete
 fresh
install. Guess not, cause here is my problem:

I have 2 hard drives: one 13gig cut up for windows and one 5gig cut
 up for
linux.

The problem is that I can only create a swap partion on my 5 gig
 drive. I
have deleted all partitions in fdisk, disk druid, linux fdisk,
 delpart etc
etc and every time I come to disk druid in the setup. It says that I
 have
100% free space on my 5 gig drive, but when I try to create a /boot
 or a /
root drive it says there isnt enough space.

Oddly enough I can create swap files (as many , or as big as I want
 with the
5 gig drive?)

Why cant I make any other drives? I tried creating them with fdisk
 and
converting to linux but no go.

I did an Fdisk /mbr as well (just cause i ran out of things to try)
 but
nothing.

So I guess Linux doesnt want to go on my machine, but I am sure that
 there
must be something I can do.....isnt there?

Please Help!

If you just want to get it working use the tulip.o in
 /lib/modules/<kerner
version>/net, rather than compiling your own. The de4x5.o driver is
 an
alternative.

Installing the kernel source should help with header files etc.

Kernel 2.0 stuff here. These different kernel versions use different
 library
revisions, AFAIK it aint gonna work. Your distribution should have a
pre-compiled tulip driver (locate tulip.o will find it if you are
 running
slocate) otherwise look in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/net.

Dont bother compiling your own driver unless you need to. If you are
 having
problems with tulip.o try dc4x5.o

Generally /var/log/wu-ftpd, but if they aren't there then you might
 want

distributions). Log files in general are almost always in /var/log

Hi,

Thanks for being helpful. To the question is there any reason I
 can't login
in as normal user? and su? It's seems that su can't do a lot of
 things.

The root remote login won't be enable all the time. It will be
 enable when
the user of that particular workstation give the permission to
 helpdesk to login
in as root to do havoc. So I need to write a script for this feature.
 I hope it
is as simple as I think.

About the ssh. where can I get it? Did it come in Red Hat 6.2 power
 tools cd?
It's ok. I think the web search is powerful enough.

Since in Red Hat 6.2 I an't uncomment /etc/securetty in it's
 /etc/login.defs. I
need to rename it to be able to login. Am I right?

Do you know how to go to your mboard bios? Normally, you need to
 press the
"del " key at boot up. After the memory detection. Then go look for
 advance,
and look around for pnp os. Disable it.
Save and exit.

And if you have the correct module or driver compile into your
 kernel. Then
everything shall be fine.

does your kernel support ATAPI/CDROM protocols?
Was there a CDROM in the drive?
is the ISO9660 fs supported?
just a few places to start.

Subject: Modem connects, problems with Netscape, telnet, etc,(Where is my mind?)
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:47:14 GMT

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Paul Eisenberg)

Hey! I finally got my a modem to work and connect with my Internet
Server after using the following line

setserial /dev/ttyS2 auto_irq autoconfig

It then seems to dial fine after putting a # sign in front of auth on
the /etc/ppp/options(i think correct path). Now after I connect and
it logs in I am unable to use Netscape, telnet, or anything else. It
seems like I'm not connected at all. I tried pinging, telnet, etc,
etc, on many sites. I also used another account besides root since I
read Corel disables Internet browsing with the root account. Any
 help
would be great. I also am curious as how to make the setserial line
above load up every time? I think I edit the /etc/rc.boot/0setserial
but I'm not sure if that is correct, and what to edit. Any help
 would
be great! Thanks! Take Care. Paul

Subject: After reboot, X can start by startx, but when started automatically,it
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:47:14 GMT

From: "Mingyi Liu" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'm using Redhat6.0. I recently shutdown linux using ctrl-alt-del and
 it
caused a problem: After the X started up automatically (I configured
 it to
do so), it hanged at grey screen and only mouse is functional. I got
 kind
help here and took the suggestion to use ctrl-alt-F1 to go to
 console, after
which I used Xconfigurator to prevent X start automatically. Then
 after I
log in through console and try startx, X started without any glitch
 (even
though my desktop now has a lot of icons that I don't remember I had
before)! However, I can never let X start automatically (it will hang
 there
without letting me log in), I can only log in through console and
 start X
later. Why is that? Is there some loadup script not working, then
 which one
could it be?

Thanks.

Mingyi

Actually, he *seems* to have lilo already set up. so he just needs to
run
/sbin/lilo and all _should_ be well. . . .

Subject: SCSI Module Help
Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 09:47:14 GMT

From: Nick <buronf*nospam*@clarkson.edu>

I am trying to setup RedHat 6.2 on a system, 486DX4-100, 24MB
 memory.. I
have a 3com NIC, a symbios IDE/FDC Card, a Cirrus Logic VGA Card and
 an
Adaptec AVA-1505 SCSI card.

I am trying to do a network install and when I try to add the module
 for
the scsi card (aha152x) It doesn't work. However when I try to
 specify
the module parameters. aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1. I get a kernel panic
 that
says interrupt handlers - not syncing. I have tried all the IRQ's on
 the
card (it's jumpered) 09,10,11,12. And none seem to make any
 difference.

RHat says the card is supported. Maybe there is something I am
 missing.

Thanks very much for your help.
