Hi, folks.
I've been happily using Linux for several years, but for the last few
months, I've been having to settle for using my Windoze95 machine for most
everything, because my Linux box just isn't the same as it used to be.
I have a dual P133 (Tyan Tomcat II motherboard). I was running a SMP
2.0.29 kernel for a few months, but then tried to upgrade to 2.0.34. The
new kernel would not boot, however. In fact, I tried compiling kernels for
2.0.30, 2.0.31, 2.0.32, 2.0.33, and 2.0.34, and none of them would boot,
either with SMP activated or deactivated. After I would turn on the power,
the system would attempt to read my boot floppy, but the drive light would
never go off; it would just continue to try to read the floppy. Meanwhile,
nothing would happen. I couldn't even get a LILO prompt.
Worse, I've noticed that a few of my programs don't compile correctly even
under 2.0.29. One of these is pppd, which really causes me to grieve.
Does anyone know why my machine won't take anything better than a 2.0.29
kernel? I've even tried downloading Slackware boot floppies from different
FTP sites, also with the same result. Can anyone point me in the right
direction?
It breaks my heart to be without Linux.
Thanks,
Richard England
