I fought this for months with an Adaptec 2940UW controller - and
I tried swapping controllers, new upgraded drivers, etc... and
still faced a sporadic lockup. It seemed like the SCSI bus was
not resetting, and that had been a bug in earlier drivers, so I
was convinced it was a software side/controller issue... I was
wrong.

It turned out the drive was bad. I've talked to a few other
people with similar scenarios, and they too, fixed the problem by
changing drives. I found mine finally when the driver would no
longer respond AT ALL - dropping the new drive in there
eliminated the problem completely.

My experience has led to me think that the quality of SCSI drives
varies considerably.

Something to think about as you fight your own troubles with
SCSI...
