The checker checks the cases it can reliably identify. It favours not 
accidentally giving someone an SMP kernel they cant boot over guessing
the other way. The SMP boot info can be in places where it is lost after
boot (and in one or two where it was eaten during boot  - fixed with the 
latest lilo)
