Distribution *does* matter... file layouts are quite different...
The system is more than a kernel...

I too have been a slackwarehead for years.  I like it.
Finding my way around a RedCap box can be embarrassing.  Nothing
is where i expect to find it, and everything is a symlink to
something else.

IIRC, >90% of the "how do i make SMP work on my box" messages
on this list come from RedBonnet users.  

OK so SMP is a newish phenomenon; what happens when a RedBeret 
machine chokes on a perl module because its rpm was built with
a different compiler than your perl?  

I think the rpms are a cute idea for newbies.  But as soon
as you step out of the comfort zone of your distribution CD
you need to be more of an expert than your average wizard.

And what's up with those version numbers that look like
international phone numbers?

I don't know about Caldera and SuSE.  Many people seem
satisfied with SuSE.  If you want to try something different
i'd suggest going with SuSE.
