I followed your suggestions, but, unfortunately, I still have the same problem with
"unresolved symbols".

System.map is a symbolic link that was pointing to System.map-2.2.12-20. I changed
it so now it points to System.map-2.2.12-20smp. Rebooted, but no difference.
What do you mean by "configuration in lilo"?

I went ahead and changed the depmod line in rc.sysinit.
It used to say: depmod -a
Now it says: depmod -a 2.2.12-20smp
I then rebooted, but, unfortunately, it didn't make a difference either.
Is that what you meant?
