I'll try that, but I would be surprised if that was the problem given a
post I sent today. I found a whole bevy of error messages in
/var/log/messages that are shedding a whole new light on this.

Hmmm... I don't use an accelerator card and according to my own
observations and iOmega's documentation the iOmega Ditto Easy 3200 does
not have any jumpers. When I do an insmod on the relevant modules (3.04d
or 4.XX) I get the same /var/log/messages errors. I can post them if you
wish, however I posted the relevant messages earlier today. Let me know if
you missed them. I think an experienced eye will pick out the error of my
ways rather quickly based on the error messages. Basically it was about
the FDC not being able to go over 500KBs and failing on a rate change when
I do a status (the second try at getting a status comes out fine).

How do I do that? Is is an argument to the module or is it in a config
file?

Understood. I will be extremely concise. If it doesn't fit on my screen
without scrolling, it doesn't go (unless you asked for it).
I very much appreciate your help!
