Here's something you could do. Just testing the mouse problem, not any of the other more complicated things. When you unplug the mouse and start getting those suspend_hc/wakeup_hc messages, capture a task status dump (Alt-SysRq-t). That might be of use. Another thing to try. Before unplugging the mouse, try to rmmod either or both of its drivers: usbmouse or hiddev. And by the way, it's not true that USB has totally hosed itself recently. The reality is that some fundamental bugs are finally getting fixed and doing so has exposed problems in other places, primarily usbfs and user programs.
