This isn't strictly true...

It would appear that the camera is a mass storage device.  At least, it
claims to be one.  But it has some set of non-compliances (i.e. bugs) that
may need to be adjusted for.

Hopefully, the SDK will help with this.  In the meantime, I would
periodically try it with the mass storage driver as newer kernels come
out.  Periodically I find a new bug and fix it -- the last patch I sent in
could, in theory, make a difference for a device like this.  Not that I'm
really hopeful, but it's possible.
