No, I've just barely started to catch up on devfs. Parts
of it are self-evidently good ideas, and I trust that there
are a few Top People tracking this. Other parts of it are
known to be (cough) discussion prone (cough), so I've put off
reading about it till recently ... :-)
I'm not sure I saw a browsable archive; if there's one ref'd
off the FAQ, I'll be skimming it.

What I'm doing is taking devfsd and having it call a C module
that calls /etc/usb/policy with information about new devices.
The policy file of course knows how to load drivers, and can
invoke configuration scripts as appropriate. But only if the
information from the descriptors is correct!! I noticed that
devices which were known to autoload correctly didn't work in
the new 'devfs/devfsd' world, and that was the problem.
The Java code was broken by the file naming stuff, and I've
not yet started to change any of that. (Except the prefix.)
JDK 1.2 has been no trouble at all.
