Ok if amsn was working at the uni It may have been set to go throuh a proxy 
server (anyone at the installfest care to confirm?). If so to get it work ing 
with the modem which i presume is on the machine mandrakes installed you'll 
need to run amsn and go  tools > options > preferences > proxy configuration 
and un tick the use poxy box and delete any text in that box.
