If you have any niggles with the scanner I can offer some help hopefully, since I'm the guy with the Epson 1260 you saw at the 'fest...
I exclusively use iscan with the scanner, either as a Gimp plug-in or a standalone program, since its far simpler than Xsane or Xscanimage in use, and gives better quality scans too...
If you are not able to use iscan let me know and I'll show you how to get it running inside Gimp...
