I tried X2, and the dialling isn't the problem anyway. It makes screechy noises for ages, then stops with "NO CARRIER". I.e., it's not recognising the other side. The phone line connection is established fine. THere are a few more avenues I can persue, incl a new card. If it works, I'd very much recommend it.
