And I am absolutely sure that you had not :)
Read right at the start of that page that that driver only supports
Lucent + Mars chipsets, big difference to connexant. The "lt" in ltmodem
tells you it's a lucent chip driver.

Having to run a compiler before being able to get a modem going is not
the way to get newbies hooked on Linux. Of course there's a chance of
finding a precomiled binary, this will have to match the distro+kernel
exactly or it most likely won't be a positive experience. As an
experienced Linux user I don't have a desire to compile things either,
if I can spend my time on something more productive instead. Alas,
there are no open source softmodem drivers.

Where did you get a $20-25 modem from?
