I like building systems myself though have a good amount of experience now. First time was a little scary, if you want to play around do so on some cheap second hand gear first and do some upgrades.

I was pleasantly surprised when buying parts for a system recently, from Dragon. For those of us without trade accounts somewhere, it is as cheap a place as many on PriceSpy, the effort of buying on line from out of town to save a very small amount is offset by having to wait a few days, I'm generally into instant gratification.

Anyway, the surprise was, they built the system for me, and ran memtest overnight to check memory and general stability. I hadn't expected that at all. No extra charge. Not sure if this is something they generally do, may have been because I was paying with a work cheque they were waiting to clear and were bored one evening...

Cheers,
Roger

My fifteen-year-old son’s running Ubuntu on a old eMac, and would like to switch to an x86 machine. He wants to “roll his own”, rather than purchase a ready-built machine. This isn’t something I’ve ever done, so I’m looking for advice on going about this.

Should he buy a second-hand machine to start with, so he test each component as he upgrades it? What does he need to consider to be sure he can upgrade everything easily?

Would it be better to buy everything at once, from one source, to be sure of getting a fully-functional machine? Would this cost more?

How can he be sure of ending up with a fully GNU-compatible/Linux-compatible machine?

Advices on sources, etc.?

Thanks,
