Unrelated to vmware or nvidia driver issues mentioned this week, this
same box now has a fresh install of KK and I'm about to try installing
& running VMWare Server via essentially the same method (assuming it
fails on building modules as I expect it will) once again and will
report back (though may not be today).
Cheers,
Roger
Can report a successful installation via the method outlined earlier in
the thread - essentially latest vmware-server release from last week,
then via the following link, result includes a correctly operating mouse:

Not got Remote Desktop Viewer to view a local VM yet, will view one on
hosted elsewhere, but that is a separate issue. The vmware remote
console plug-in works, but is (has been) a pain since about Feisty due
to some key remapping that I haven't got around to figuring out yet.
For example it is ctrl+alt+(number pad delete) instead of
ctrl+alt+delete, and numerous unknown mappings for arrow, delete, home
etc keys. Is somewhere down a list of things to resolve on that rainy day.
Cheers,
Roger
