To push what I said earlier, the key requirement (IMO) for any distro
worth its $.02 is an upgrade path.  Except for those boundary
conditions like a major uncompatible glibc release, you should not
need to buy a new release to get more current apps.  Caldera should
get off its collective arse and provide upgrade packages to keep you
current.  That service might even be worth paying a fee for the
privilege of using it.   Debian has such a feature, I believe RedHat
has such a (chargable) feature, Mandrake has such a feature, Slackware
has such a feature, and of course my favorite (the unmentionable
distro in my signature) has such a feature.
