Perhaps, but look at this: "I am going to the church" emphasizes a 
particular church *building*, while "I am going to church" means 
attending some event there.  If you "go shopping" you are shopping as 
you go, so, unless I am walking and eating (or, worse, driving and 
eating), I do not "go eating."  Of course, all this is perfectly 
obvious -- which is why Perl syntax is so easy :)
