It depends on what you're trying to teach ...


If the class consists of hacker types who want to learn all the arcane details, then use one of the macho distros (Slack, Debian, Gentoo, LFS).

If the class is more "normal" then use a well-supported commercial distro (aka Red Hat).

There are two distinctly different ideas about what "learning" Linux means. Ok, maybe three: user, power user/sysadmin, hacker.

Here is perhaps a useful test question to ponder: "Do you want to teach them to make kernel modifications, or do you want to teach them to configure networking?"

All just IMHO, of course ...
