I have had no trouble with 3.0x. I think the statement made about it was
that, unlike 2.9x, the 3.0x readme did not claim that it had passed
lots of testing. Doesn't mean it hasn't. But the confirmation is
lacking. I compiled KDE 2.1.1 with it and it ran fine.

If you don't need features in 3.0x, the latest 2.9x is probably safest.
