Others have mentioned some things, but I figured I'd throw in my take.

If your C: drive is taking up all of your hard drive and you don't want
to deal with any new hardware, I'd suggest backing up your data,
repartition and reinstall Windows on about half your drive, then install
Linux on the other.

Good distros for newbies these days are Ubuntu, Mandriva and Fedora.
You can check distrowatch.com for gobs of info on currently available
Linux distros.  My suggestion is to read through the installation HOWTO
<http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Installation-HOWTO/index.html> on The Linux
Documentation Project, then read through the installation docs of the
distro of your choice.  The HOWTO is a little dated, but still contains
some good general information.
