I have been given a copy of Ubuntu by a co-worker, but I haven't had any time
to install it.  I have been using SUSE in my second drive successfully;
although, I am still new to Linux, and there are a lot of things I haven't
figured out, yet, I intend to partician my main drive and attempt to install
Ubuntu there. Does anyone know of any conflicts I should be aware of?

Ubuntu is probably popular because it is very much a Just Works(TM)
distribution. (Not alway of course, but generally.)

It's aimed towards the newcomer. Actually, even a hardcore Debian using
guru friend of mine has found that he now uses Kubuntu (the KDE
version--standard Ubuntu uses Gnome) almost exclusively.

It's quite an easy distribution to use--I would guess that some of its
popularity is simply due to word of mouth.

It's a reasonable introdction to using Linux for your desktop, though
some proprietary programs, such as flash, aren't installed by default.
(However, they are readily available.)

Add good newcomer support on their forums, and you have a nice recipe
for success. Why is it more popular than some of the others? Well, the
Fedora stuff takes several CDs to download, as do SuSE and (I think)
Mandriva.

Also, let's face it, Ubuntu has become trendy. That trendiness factor
can't be overlooked.

As one who prefers a bit more of a handson type distro, my main Linux
distro is Arch.

It's sort of a graphic front end to Debian, often with newer versions of
the packages. :) (Heh, now ~that~ could start a flame war, but
hopefully, most of the people on this list know that ~I~ think I have a
great sense of humor. Note to British list members--yes, we Yanks spell
it humor. By the way, love that band of yours, the Roulling Stounes.)

So, I would say that it's more popular than Debian among newcomers
because it's easier to use, more popular than Fedora and SuSE because
it's easier to download and install--I haven't played with SuSE in
years, I can't say Ubuntu strikes me as much easier to use than Fedora,
or even that it works better. On the other hand, with both of them, I
tend to throw them on something to play with them for a few days, and
that's it.

Lastly, I repeat, the trendiness factor can't be overlooked.
