I like the features of Star Office (I have used 5.0/5.1).
Unfortunately, this suite is a memory PIG and that is the one thing that I
really don't like about it. You can load Linux on a slower machine (486/33
w/ 8 MB RAM) and have it run fine (can't do that w/ win95 & NOT w/ win98).
Load up SO on that machine and you have PROBLEMS (even w/ swap space). That
is why I will most likely use WP8, MOST of the time (I can't wait till the
rest of the suite comes out). I am also very interested in trying out the
ApplixWare suite.
I wish SO would implement some changes to improve the suite's speed
and the efficiency of its memory usage. Some suggestions: don't load so many
features into memory when the suite starts up. Only load up the most
commonly used features and components (ie the wordprocessor and the
spreadsheet) Also, include a configuration menu (for advanced users) to tell
the suite on startup which features and components the user wants loaded up.
(if the suite has these features I haven't found them, if it does I apologize)
One last thing: I know that this e-mail isn't exactly appropriate,
but I just had to get this off my chest.
