Yes, finally figured it out myself this morning :) the file was empty. Had
to put in the line from man interfaces. This was definitely after
reading Raju's mail where he correctly diagnosed that lo was not coming
up. Thanks !!
What I can't understand is, why was that file empty in the first place. As
I said in an earlier mail, the debian install had barfed at not finding a
network interface. I had to go into expert install and skip that step.
Could this be flaky hardware ?
