Good choices for an advanced user. They are not for newbies.

Linux Mint is not much different from Ubuntu. It is not worth
re-installing for. You can even add the Mint features via PPA to
Ubuntu and get Mate, MGSE without much effort. The problem for people
used to Ubuntu and switching to Mint is that it has not upgrade tool.
so if you are used to upgrading then Mint is not for you. Clem and the
Mint team deserve much credit for making Mint 12 an exciting release.
If you are installing a new distro or are not averse to re-installing
it is a good choice.

Linux Mint is a GNOME 3 distro just like Ubuntu. One uses GNOME Shell
and the other uses Unity as a shell, but you can install GNOME Shell.
If you do not like Unity, you probably won't like GNOME Shell and Mate
is not stable yet. It would be wiser to switch to XFCE in Ubuntu than
switch to Mint for Mate, if you want the old desktop metaphor. It is a
waiting game and race now as to who can deliver the goods. GNOME Shell
is betting on its extensions library. Ubuntu is betting on its lenses
and scopes and PPAs. Both are trying to make it more configurable.
Mint is betting on its MGSE and Mate. You get the most flexibility
with Ubuntu. You can run any desktop that you want. The same cannot be
said about any other distro including Mint. Some people are clearly
frustrated, but most are adapting. There is no compelling reason to
switch with an LTS coming up in April, IMO. You may be jumping the gun
and regret it.
