I usually use debian or anything that uses apt. The main thing I like
about debian is that it gives you an absolutely rock solid stable branch
that can be used on a server without issue. You can get amazing uptime
with a debian stable server if you are careful with your updates and
maintenance. Often desktop users will get confused with the stable branch
seeing as how it usually lags far behind the current technology. The best
thing though is that it maintains an air of agility if you aren't concerned
with having gnome or kde. In fact it can use a number of window managers
and Lxde if you so choose. I tend to use awesomewm on my little media
server so that I can easily administrate it and get down to business when I
need to do stuff on it like uploading new content to it.

For most desktop use many people will find ubuntu or mint quite adequate.
I recommend Mint Debian Edition because it uses the debian unstable branch
for its packages and they kinda group the packages into an update pack so
that you can have up to date packages but still have some stability.
Problem is that it still comes with a little bloat from mint but if you
are like me that can be worked around somewhat by installing a window
manager and sticking to that.

Arch is unforgiving in its package management and frustrates me when I need
to rewrite half my config files because it wants to upgrade stuff so often
and in bulk. That said I haven't found a desktop distro that lean and that
quick on its feet that doesn't make some serious compromises in usability.
My issue is that they dropped official support for the catalyst driver
back in 09 and they upgrade all the packages faster than most folks could
download them. Then again I sure do like it that I can run something like
lxde or awesomewm and have a machine that has nearly instant response time
in everything I do normally. Also it is one of the few distros that can
get you some more FPS out of your games if you are careful to keep things
light. Gentoo is the only other distro that I've used that is that lean.
Debian is pretty lean but those two are anorexic holocaust survivor lean.
