I have found the same, but also some very nice people. It is the extremists and crusaders that give Debian a bad name, which is too bad. While their distribution has codes of conduct, they do not seem to obey any rules and there is no way of enforcing them in the wild. It is tempting to see free software as a cause and to be an evangelist, but there is a line that many have crossed over and there is much animosity for distros (chiefly Ubuntu) that do not support its goals and disrespect for users who fall short (which is easy to do). They do more harm than good. The trouble with Ubuntu goes back to when it first started and there were paid positions available and some Debian higher ups did not get them, so they started bad mouthing Canonical and it has spread to the user base and has not stopped. This makes it look rather childish. I am not a fan of stable or stale as I prefer to call it. I think that it is ideal for a server, but for the desktop it is too much of a lag. It is the equivalent of being at least two years behind on everything. I also do not like the rolling release model much. Installation is a major ordeal because you need to do a major update right away, so installing becomes a duplication. It installs old packages and then it need to upgrade everything. I like six month releases because it gives me the latest and up to datest and it I have something to look forward to. I agree that LMDE is worth a look if you want Debian's model. I prefer aptosid which is a bit edgier. It is great to have both models because there are different kinds of users. You just have to find what works best for you.
