I was thinking the operating system and the applications. I keep most data on
other partions or off the machine.

Well, yes, but Eric is talking about one shot and 80 or more GB. I think you
are thinking of a rescue disk approach, although with Vista, this is a very
weak method.

You can do the same thing to a DVD. It's called an ISO copy.

Hello All.
Having suffered more than my share of disk failures I think I have the best
recovery scheme on my computer right now.
It is called Acronis True Image and it allows one to CLONE a hard disk! You
can clone to an external disk (the same size or larger) and if your main disk
dies you can boot from the Acronis CD and clone back to the exact condition you
were in when you made the clone copy.
This is an EXACT copy. Everything is copied, the operating system, it's
validation, all applications, all settings. There will be only the delay
required to boot from the CD and perform the clone.
I clone my C: drive every week, or every time I get a successful new program
install working.
You can buy the Acronis True Image CD for about 50 bucks at newegg.com.
Buy a nice big external hard drive at the same time and forget all about
re-installing stuff ever again.
If you are like me, buy TWO external drives and keep them in separate places
on the boat.
You know, belt AND suspenders!
