This was about 4 years ago.  Although selling a boat is always a crap shoot.

This barge wasn't unlit or at least there was NO allegation that the tug
operator was in any way at fault.  The barge was being towed and the tow line
was about 300 feet IIRC.

That is quite true.  I don't know if they had a life raft or a dinghy, but they
got out into something and that's good.  

What got my goat was that 

a) They complained about not being picked up quickly when they were off the
shore of a VERY rural county where the fire department rescue people are all
volunteers and their boat sinking was about 3 a.m.  There's nothing there on
that shore - no marinas or settlements.  I think they should count themselves
lucky that they were found so quickly.  Just getting the word to the fire
department and getting them down to the boat could take half an hour.  It isn't
as if it was a normal happening.

b) They seemed to take no responsibility the accident being partly due to his
leaving the boat on autopilot and going below when he had a boogie on the radar.
