I was hoping the team would take this type of "focused bug fixing" approach
with 1.1 by gathering the skills into a single direction to focus on a few
democratically chosen bugs.
For example, Undo/Redo is a major milestone and claimed to be working with
stable-1.1, but it doesn't work in some of the most important use-cases
such as 1. Removing a track 2. Removing an effect. From a quality control
perspective, the partial implementation is a huge no and this is why --
Accidentally removing a timely creation of a song -- such as an entire
track or an effect that has been finely tuned -- can be detrimental to the
work-flow of a track. The re-introduction of "Redo" provides a false
security to the user and when it doesn't behave for the major component I
believe will grow further distaste with the users than not having it at
all...
But this idea of assuring quality is something that can only truly be
mandated by a commercial software package. We are a community driven
software package. We are a team of volunteers. Volunteers are taking
their own time with no compensation (other than an intrinsic sense of
accomplishment, pride, good will, etc) so who decides what they work on?
Well, the answer depends on the project as some are structured more
democratically than others, but at the end of the day we have to realize
that if we really want something done, we do it ourselves. Although this
may on be the most efficient use of our time as musicians, composers,
community members, it really doesn't matter.
You can't step into a disheveled church and say "I'm just here for
mass."... "By the way, when do they plan on fixing that organ?"
