I imagine theirs likely not many existing audio engines that are both an
improvement and compatible with the codebase, but the alternative would be
to code a audio engine from scratch and that seems like it'd be a multi-year
experiment and a daunting task for even a small group of highly skilled
coders

IMO given the limited resources the best course of action would be to try to
get the current iteration of LMMS as bug free and functional as possible &
promote it a bit to gain more visibility which could lead to more skilled
coders getting involved with the project & a larger userbase so
crowdsourcing development would be more feasible
