I think it is also possible to export Illustrator files as actual SVGs
without the info contained in the proprietary blob... though I've always
had good experiences importing Photoshop files in Gimp and Illustrator
files in Inkscape.  But really, the last time I used Photoshop was 7
years ago, so things may have changed.  And also, using libre software
is more preferred for me in every instance.  I will always choose a
libre alternative to a proprietary.  There are MANY good libre programs
for artists.  MyPaint, Pinta (Paint.NET), Krita... there are a lot of
really great programs out there :)
