I can't say for sure, but I think that MTAs (Mail Transfer Agents) use a
different protocol to speak to each other than client apps use to speak
to the MTAs (SMTP, POP, IMAP).  Maybe somebody on the list who knows
more about the intricacies of mail can clarify this for us?
