This is almost bound to happen - as long as someone at the BBC and other
broadcasting cos. has the vision, and wherewithall, to digitise the back
catalogue in a cost-effective manner into a form that can be sold or
streamed on demand - then television will be just another media format
accessed via the web.

Oh, and Blackstar & others will need to reconsider their business model
- much like the record cos. are having to just now with Napster et al
showing them the way of the future.

One of the things that's quite interesting on Napster (so I'm told :-)
is the availability of old radio shows such as Hancock's Half Hour, The
Goons, Round the Horne, etc. - none of which are otherwise readily
available to present day listeners (except in the aforementioned
occasional two or three episodes on a tape at a high price per episode
format).

One shudders to think that, IIRC, about 12 years ago there was
apparently discussion at the BBC about ditching master tapes of old
series (Secret Army and so on) on the basis that there wasn't space to
store them and there'd never be capacity to broadcast them. Thankfully
sanity apparently prevailed.

Andrew.
