Gnome doesn't rely on a particular window manager, and it sounds like you don't like the default one. I'm rather attached to WindowMaker from when it had good features but was still fast on my 486. Now Enlightenment, that is the spawn of the devil and a secret plot by Intel and graphics card manufactures to sell more stuff. It's possible you got it by default.
