Which is easy to do, even if you are ex-directory. My preferred solution
is to tell the operator that I am out on a date with $victim's daughter,
and that she has been involved in a serious accident and I need to tell
$victim.

So do what I do. Refuse to pick up the phone until the switchboard
operator tells you the person's name. If anyone still gets through,
I feel justified in treating them like the sub-human shit they are.
