in addition 24/7 phone access is all very well and good, but it'll tie up your phone line 24/7 too. ADSL won't. Also, a decent ADSL router (according to desnarf, who's just got one) can have an inbuilt firewall. Assuming your mother is running Windows this might not be a bad idea. I use blueyonder which is reasonably cheap (especially if you get tv and phone from them too.) It terminatinates to a rj45 which plugs into my smoothie box. The connection/bandwidth used to be terrible, but they seem to have been okay in the last six months. They use a transproxy. Consider if you would be willing to have a transproxy on your connection or not too. Having one will cause you problems accessing some sites and may bandwidth bottleneck you though services with them tend to be cheaper. (for the record smoothwalls inbuilt transproxy is great at routing around other transroxies) Later.
