Or use OpenOffice.org or StarOffice or whatever reckons it can save in a Word format. If you believe that a plain text cv makes a big enough impact for you in this highly competitive market then a simple Word document with little formatting should suffice to get you past the first hurdle. I'm not getting drawn into the presentation vs content debate... Simon.
