I no longer have the details - I had to troubleshoot it for a friend using Multimail on my IMAP server (UW-IMAP) about 18 months ago. As far as I remember, UW-IMAP sends a "capabilities" banner when you've logged in without being asked for it, and Multimail chokes on the unexpected input (which the IMAP RFC says it isn't allowed to do).
