It's not a certification, not even a certificate. It's an education program
with a test in the end, that will give you a badge, but no credential at
all. It should provide participants an overview of what IT is, which jobs
exist in IT and enable them to make an educated decision whether or not a
career in IT might be appropriate.

that doesn't really help and it is questionable if it makes any money

LPI is a non-profit, we're committed to our mission, not to our bank
account :)

I thought the "P" in LPI stood for Professional.

Correct, that's why we care about individuals who consider becoming a
Professional. If we want to enable people to use open source and free
technologies, a first step is to raise initial interest in technology and
give anyone who is interested enough insights to understand what IT is
about and if it suits their interests.

StartIT won't get anyone a job, but hopefully it will help lots of people
to find what kind of job they want.

So far most feedback is very encouraging and enthusiastic, it seems that at
least those working with our intended audience consider our approach
helpful.
