Andy,
Ok, XDM is listening on port 177, but maybe it's still not configured
to allow remote clients.
This is controlled by the /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess file.
make sure there is a line in that file that starts
with an asterisk ('*'). it MUST be the first character
on the line.
It should look something like this:
* #any host can get a login window
Then, restart XDM and see if it works.
