John, 

Since all the client sites are dispersed, each computer would need to
access the internet and act as its own firewall. So, perhaps we could
place restrictions on the user permissions (writing to disk on the site
machine, but allowing writing to disk on the server) so as to mimic thin
client behavior.  

In this situation, a LTSP solution would not be appropriate.
