i had the same problem...
i think (as said) that root uid is not exported via NIS , so
i just put a good passwd to user root in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/passwd
(with htpasswd for instance)

that 's maybe awfull but  it works...
i can now log as root on the ltsp client pc
