Is it just that one application that is crashing, or is the
entire desktop crashing, taking you back to a login ?

If it is the entire desktop crashing, I'd guess that you are
running out of ram on the workstation.

When that happens, the kernel goes on a killing spree, and
it almost always chooses the Xserver as it's first target.

Try turning on nfs-swap in the lts.conf file.  The parameter
is:

   USE_NFS_SWAP  = Y

I'll bet that clears up your problem.
