It's really quite complex:
The graphics card bios has to support the resolution required or that 
resolution cannot be selected.
Some intel chipsets allow the bios to be changed and that is what the various 
programs do.

If you cannot change the bios you cannot select the resolution to what is not 
there. The End.
If you can you can, say H V timing, you don't need a mode line.

If you carefully check the xorg.log it will tell you lots. If you can, and do, 
change the video card then you can do so and get what you want. I run an 
nvidia 5200 on a Via board with 1 slot and get 1400x900. Without the card I 
can only get the 11280x1024 etc
