Actually my $0.02 for what it is worth:

I format my disk
sda1 (whatever) 20G
sda2 20G
sda3 swap
sda4 home

Then you can build the play system / upgrade etc on the other 1 or 2 partition 
without touching your main system, and :-) all the titbits you forgot are 
still there on the original root disk.

I installed karmic desktop, made it do as-I-wanted.Any crap about save 
resources, server type system is just that. AKA swap!
