Are you running version 12.04 of Edubuntu (or Ubuntu)? What you
describe is, unfortunately, the normal behavior after installing Ubuntu
12.04 as an LTSP server. It may be true for Edubuntu as well.
Try setting the "session" to "ubuntu 2d". At the login screen, go to
the bottom left and click on "Preferences". Select Session and change
from "Default" to "Ubuntu 2D". You should login with the correct Unity
panel, etc.
If this works, there is a way to make "ubuntu 2d" the default session
for all users:
I force this by creating the file /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
with the
contents:
[default]
LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"
(If you are using a 64-bit client, this file would be
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64/lts.conf.)
Please comment because I would like to put this information on the
UbuntuLTSP wiki if many others are having this same issue.

I am a total noob at Edubuntu and even networking in general but I
finally managed to get a client to boot and log into the server but
when it does the desktop is missing any navigation. There is no icons
in the top right that indicate network connection, date, username
reboot etc. There are no program icons in the left menu either.
There is, however, a folder on the desktop titled "untitled folder".
It is filled with the os folders and files.
How do I get the client to display programs?
