Robert,

I hope someone else can comment on Moodle and the MX180 PC for you. I have no experience. Perhaps e-mail this list with a new Subject.

Thank you for your encouragement; I am somewhat uncomfortable updating the Wiki due to inexperience, but I may try.

It has been easier for me to work with LTSP on a 10.04 server than on a 12.04 server. I keep running into undocumented issues on 12.04, so I stick with 10.04 which is a shame. I think the new Unity interface is the biggest cause of these problems on 12.04. Otherwise, 12.04 supports newer hardware and applications better than 10.04.

We have been running 25 users on LTSP for about 4 years in a production manufacturing environment.

Hey David,

Hey hey hey HEY!

Yes! That worked like a charm!

I have four test stations set up and rebooted all of them and got the menus :-)

Your instructions worked flawlessly! Thank you so much!

Adding this to the wiki is an excellent idea because I Googled for a long time and wasn't able to find anything. It may be because it is a difficult issue to describe in a short search phrase. I suggest you splatter the article with as many variants as you can.

Suggestions:

Edubuntu 12.04 No menu
Edubuntu 12.04 No menu after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu after login

Edubuntu 12.04 No Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 No Ubuntu admin bar after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No Ubuntu admin bar after login

Edubuntu 12.04 No menu or Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 No menu or Ubuntu admin bar after login
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu or Ubuntu admin bar
Edubuntu 12.04 Desktop but No menu or Ubuntu admin bar after login

For clarity on the wiki let me mention that my lts.conf was already there.

It had
[default]
     LDM_THEME=edubuntu
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LDM_LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8

NOTICE (maybe mention in the wiki) there are no quotes in all the current code. Your code worked with the quotes but I also tested w/o them and it won't work w/o quotes. A strange result.

So, yes, I am using Edubuntu 12.04. It is at a small private school in Winter Park, Florida (just north of Orlando). It is a school for special needs kids and I'll be doing a couple of courses there on building computer games. The owner's wishes are to get them equipped with applicable skills and hopefully I'll be able to get them typing, doing basic graphics, simple coding etc along the way to building a game that they will acquire those skills.

I am definitely a Moodle fan so that will be my next step (to install Moodle). Now my research seems to indicate that Edubuntu will not have a conflict with Moodle. I was concerned there would be because there will be two servers running (I don't see Apache installed or running). Would you have some advice on installing Moodle before I attempt it?

Also, are you familiar with the MX180 PC?

$69

We would need a grant of some type to acquire them but the kids would be able to use them to connect to the lab and could take them home to have as their own.

Thanks again,

    Are you running version 12.04 of Edubuntu (or Ubuntu)? What you
    describe is, unfortunately, the normal behavior after installing
    Ubuntu 12.04 as an LTSP server. It may be true for Edubuntu as well.

    Try setting the "session" to "ubuntu 2d". At the login screen, go
    to the bottom left and click on "Preferences". Select Session and
    change from "Default" to "Ubuntu 2D". You should login with the
    correct Unity panel, etc.

    If this works, there is a way to make "ubuntu 2d" the default
    session for all users:

    I force this by creating the file
    /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf with the
    contents:

    [default]
         LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d"

    (If you are using a 64-bit client, this file would be
    /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/amd64/lts.conf.)

    Please comment because I would like to put this information on the
    UbuntuLTSP wiki if many others are having this same issue.

    I am a total noob at Edubuntu and even networking in general but
    I finally managed to get a client to boot and log into the server
    but when it does the desktop is missing any navigation. There is
    no icons in the top right that indicate network connection, date,
    username reboot etc. There are no program icons in the left menu
    either.

    There is, however, a folder on the desktop titled "untitled
    folder". It is filled with the os folders and files.

    How do I get the client to display programs?
