SF lets you download a nightly tarball through a link on "CVS" page: 
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cvstarballs/lucene-cvsroot.tar.gz, whenever 
you're ready to pull it.  The tarball is generated nightly by the SF 
script, so you should probably wait at least 48 hours after you announce a 
freeze for (a) all developers to stop committing and (b) SF to regenerate 
the tarball.
