Thanks for the pointers. Unfortunately, all are windows server based :(.
IIRC AVG used to be able to update from a network folder, maybe I should get the free copy and try it out (thereby, taking advantage of my existing samba infrastructure).
I have a bad feeling I might be back to using windows servers in y2k6 just to get to the level of automation I need to stay sane :(.

There is something called Windows Server Update Services for that
purpose.........and it is free.
